There remains the question of the payment for legal

advice and assistance. In Hongkong, no doubt, the corresponding

office has the benefit of the advice of the Law Officers of the

Colony; and, in case a Hongkong officer were registrar here, he

would in most cases obtain advice from the same source by post. On

the other hand advising the Registrar is not part of the duties hitherto laid on the frown Advocate who would prefer a fixed annual

fee in place of rendering accounts from time to time. His work in

connection with court cases would of course not be included as that may fairly be said to be part of his regular duties. What that fee should be, in the case of commutation is preferred, I am not com-

-petent to estimate.
